A well-maintained roofline not only shields your home from the unpredictable British weather but also augments the visual appeal of your home. Our specialist roofline services are tailored to meet the unique requirements of your home, whether it's a quaint cottage, or a modern new build.

What Are Roofline Services?

The term 'roofline' refers to the edge or contour of a building's roof, in particular, where the roof meets the walls. A building's roofline is made up of a range of essential components including, guttering fascias and soffits. Together, these elements play a critical role in both the aesthetics and the functional protection of a building, safeguarding it from weather and potential structural damages.

Roofline services involve the installation of roofline products on new builds and extensions, as well as the repair and replacement of these important elements on older buildings.

What Are Fascias?

Fascias, or roof fascia boards as they are also know, are the long, straight boards that run horizontally along the lower edge of the roof. They are mounted at the point where the roof meets the outer walls of the house, serving as the primary support for the guttering system, and providing:

  • Support for Guttering: One of the primary functions of the fascia is to provide a strong and sturdy base for the guttering system, ensuring that it remains in place even during heavy rainfall or snow.
  • Protection: Fascias seal the roof and the interior of the building from the elements, preventing rain, wind, and pests from entering the roof or loft space. This helps in preventing potential water damage, dampness, and rot.
  • Structural Integrity: Attached directly to the roof trusses, fascias provide structural strength to the roof's edge, ensuring the stability of the outer layer of tiles or slates.
  • Neat Finish: Apart from their functional role, fascias offer a neat, finished look to the edge of the roof, covering the ends of rafters that would otherwise be visible.

Regular inspection and maintenance of fascias are essential, as damaged or rotting fascia boards can compromise the overall integrity of the roofing system, leading to more significant problems down the line.

What Are Soffits?

Soffits are the boards situated directly beneath the fascia, extending from the side of the building to the edge of the eave. They play a pivotal role in the roofline system, bridging the gap between the outer walls of a property and the roofline. Key features and functions of soffits include:

  • Ventilation: One of the primary purposes of soffits is to assist in ventilating the attic or loft space. Many soffits come with built-in vents that allow continuous airflow, ensuring that moisture doesn't build up, thus averting the risk of timber decay in the roof structure.
  • Protection from Elements: Just as fascias shield the roof's edge, soffits protect the underside. They act as a barrier against intense weather conditions in Surrey, preventing rain, snow, and pests from sneaking into the rafters or the home's interiors.
  • Aesthetic Appeal: Soffits contribute significantly to the visual aesthetics of a property. They provide a clean, polished look to the underside of the eaves, concealing the rafters and ensuring a more finished appearance.
  • Insulation Support: In certain architectural designs, soffits can also play a role in supporting the insulation of the loft space, aiding in temperature regulation of the property and contributing to energy efficiency.

Regular inspection and upkeep of soffits are paramount, as worn-out or damaged soffits can lead to compromised insulation, moisture build-up, and a decreased lifespan of the surrounding roofing components.

What Are Gutters & Downpipes?

Gutters and gutter downpipes form the essential rainwater drainage system of a property, working cohesively to channel rainwater from the roof to the ground, ensuring the property remains free from water damage. Their main roles include:

  • Efficient Drainage: Gutters, typically affixed to fascias, run horizontally along the edge of the roof. Their principal role is to capture rainwater, directing it safely towards downpipes. Downpipes then channel this water from the gutters to the ground or into drainage systems, preventing water from pooling around the building's foundation.
  • Protection Against Water Damage: By systematically directing water away from the property, gutters and downpipes play a pivotal role in preventing issues like water ingress, dampness, and foundation erosion. For Surrey homes, where varied weather conditions are the norm, this system is especially vital.
  • Structural Longevity: Gutters and downpipes safeguard the building's walls, windows, doors, and foundations from prolonged water exposure. In doing so, they help in maintaining the structural integrity of the property, averting potential damages like wall stains, mold growth, and foundation weakening.
  • Aesthetic Integration: While their primary purpose is functional, gutters and downpipes are available in various materials and styles, so they can also be chosen to blend seamlessly with the property's aesthetics.

Regular cleaning, inspection, and maintenance of gutters and downpipes are imperative. Leaves, twigs, and other debris can lead to blockages, resulting in overflows or leaks, which can subsequently cause significant property damage.

What Are Eaves Protection Boards?

Eaves Protection Boards, also referred to as Eaves Protectors or Eaves Guard Systems, are designed to safeguard the delicate area where the roof tiles meet the gutter. They provide a number benefits, including:

  • Protection Against Deterioration: These boards are primarily installed to prevent the sagging and deterioration of the underlay beneath roof tiles, especially when it becomes aged or waterlogged. This ensures that rainwater is directed into the gutter and doesn’t seep into the roof structure.
  • Extension of Roof Lifespan: By providing an added layer of protection against potential rot and water ingress, Eaves Protection Boards play a pivotal role in prolonging the lifespan of the roof, especially in the unpredictable weather conditions of Surrey.
  • Enhancement of Gutter Efficiency: Eaves Protection Boards ensure the smooth flow of rainwater off the tiles and into the guttering system, reducing the risk of water overflowing back onto the fascia or into the loft space, thereby enhancing the efficiency of the entire roofline system.
  • Integrated Solution: While their role is crucially functional, these boards are discreetly integrated, maintaining the seamless aesthetics of the property. Their inconspicuous presence ensures that the property's visual appeal remains undisturbed.

It’s essential to have measures in place that ensure every component of the roofline system works harmoniously. Eaves Protection Boards are one such component, bridging the gap between roof tiles and gutters. Regular checks and prompt replacements of these boards, where necessary, ensure a home remains shielded from potential water damage.

What Are Hidden Vents?

Hidden vents, as their name suggests, are discreet ventilation solutions incorporated within the roofline system. Ensuring adequate roof ventilation without compromising on aesthetics is a necessity, and hidden vents can provide the following:

  • Promotion of Airflow: The primary function of hidden vents is to facilitate consistent airflow between the roof's underlay and the tiles or slates. This ensures that any accumulated moisture or condensation is effectively dissipated, reducing the risks associated with moisture build-up.
  • Prevention of Moisture Damage: By ensuring a steady flow of air, hidden vents play a crucial role in preventing moisture accumulation in the loft space or attic. This is vital for Surrey homes to guard against issues like mold, timber rot, and insulation degradation which can result from prolonged moisture presence.
  • Aesthetic Appeal: One of the standout features of hidden vents is their discreet design. Unlike more prominent venting systems, these vents are seamlessly integrated into the roofline, ensuring that the beauty and architectural integrity of the property are undisturbed.
  • Enhanced Energy Efficiency: Proper ventilation is crucial for maintaining a balanced indoor temperature. By aiding in the expulsion of excess heat during warmer months and mitigating cold drafts during the colder periods, hidden vents contribute to a more energy-efficient home environment.

While their presence might not be visibly evident, the impact of hidden vents on the longevity and health of the roofing system is undeniable. As with all roofline components, it's essential to ensure that hidden vents are adequately installed and maintained.

What Are Box Ends?

Box ends are an often overlooked, but essential component of a property's roofline. They serve as the intricate junction where the fascias and soffits meet at the corner of the roof, typically where the eaves and gable end intersect. Box ends do a number of jobs, including:

  • Seamless Transition: The primary purpose of box ends is to provide a clean and seamless transition between the fascia and soffit boards, especially at the roof corners. This ensures that the entire roofline appears fluid and integrated.
  • Enhanced Protection: By sealing off the corners, box ends further prevent ingress of water, pests, and drafts into the loft space, adding an extra layer of protection to the already crucial functions of the fascias and soffits.
  • Structural Cohesion: Beyond the aesthetic, box ends reinforce the roofline's structure. They provide support, ensuring that both fascias and soffits remain firmly in place, even in the face of Surrey's sometimes challenging weather conditions.
  • Architectural Detail: In addition to their practical benefits, box ends add a touch of architectural detail to homes. They can be tailored in style and finish to match or contrast with the main roofline, contributing to the aesthetic appeal of a property.

Box ends might be a smaller component of the grand design, but their role is pivotal. As with other roofline elements, ensuring their proper installation and periodic maintenance is vital.

How We Replace Timber Rooflines With uPVC Soffits, Fascias & Guttering

  • We start our process by removing all existing timber fascias and soffits. After doing this we check the roof rafters, if any are rotten we then repair or treat them to ensure we have a solid fixing for the new fascias.
  • We then use aluminium capped fixing pins to securely fix the fascias and aluminium screws to secure the soffits. By using aluminium there will be no rusting, which ensures there will be no rust spots developing on your new fascias or soffits around your roofline.
  • After we have securely installed the soffits and fascias we can then fit your new guttering and downpipes.
  • We install over fascia vents, also known as hidden vents, and we install eaves protection to prevent the damp. Hidden vents give your roof a chance to breathe without having to vent the soffit.
